The Cadet Centre for Adventurous Training (CCAT) was established to deliver Adventurous Training (AT) qualification and skill-based experience courses for Senior Cadets aged 16+ from the Army Cadet Force (ACF) and Combined Cadet Force (CCF). It is important that before your attend your course to ensure that you have the appropriate Cadet training kit at your disposal. This article focuses on UK Cadet Canoeing Training.
A wide range of challenging, inspirational, progressive, and safely managed courses are offered at all levels from foundation through to Intermediate and Leader qualifications through both the Joint Service and National Governing Body (NGB) accredited schemes.
The Senior Cadets (16+) can embark on a pathway to gain a foundation and Intermediate skills qualification in Open Canoeing and Kayaking (Sea & Inland).
UK Cadet Canoeing Training Centres
The CCAT has three main UK based delivery centres:
- Capel Curig Training Camp located in Snowdonia National Park in North Wales
- Halton Training Camp near Lancaster on the banks of the River Lune in the Lake District,
- Feshiebridge Lodge which is located in Cairngorm National Park – 8 miles from Aviemore.
British Canoeing Intermediate Canoe Award (ICA)
The British Canoeing Intermediate Canoe Award is a 5-day course delivered in a moving (Grade 2) and open water environment with winds up to force 3. The course content includes clothing and equipment, access and conservation, river hazards and grading, weather, lifting, carrying, and launching, efficient forward/reverse paddling, moving sideways, edging, support strokes, breaking in/out, ferry gliding, group/self/deep water rescues, boat trim, sailing and poling.
The British Canoeing Canoe Award is incorporated into this course.
British Canoeing Intermediate Kayak Award (IKA)
The British Canoeing Intermediate Kayak Award (IKA) is a 5-day course delivered in a moving water environment (Grade 2).
The course content includes clothing and equipment, access and conservation, river hazards and grading, weather, lifting, carrying and launching, efficient forward/reverse paddling, edging, and moving sideways, support strokes, breaking in/out, ferry gliding, group/self/deep water rescues, rolling and safety training.
The British Canoeing White Water Award is incorporated into this course.
The British Canoeing Moderate Water Leader Training (MWLT) is a 2-day course.
The content for Open Canoe leader includes efficient and effective open water skills, paddle effectively up, down and across a Beaufort Force 4 wind, rafting, sailing, efficient and effective grade 2 river running skills, upstream manoeuvres (ferries and S-turns), checking, setting and reverse ferry gliding, eddy turns both into and out of the current, supporting and edging, lining, poling, navigation, demonstrate skilful application of appropriate boat and bank-based safety and rescue skills in open and moving water, leadership, access and the environment, planning, river hazards and weather
Training is valid for 3 years, during this time, and upon completion of the assessment prerequisites candidates can then put themselves forward for assessment.
The British Canoeing Moderate Water Leader Assessment (MWLA)
The content of this 2 day course for White Water Kayak Leader includes forward paddling, breaking in and out, ferry gliding, s-turns, surf small waves, paddle into and out of small stoppers, moving sideways on the move, supporting, changing direction, tactical decisions, demonstrate skilful application of appropriate boat and bank-based safety and rescue skills, leadership, navigation, river hazards, access and the environment and weather.
British Canoeing White Water Safety & Rescue (WWRST)
The British Canoeing White Water Safety and Rescue Training (WWSRT) is a 2- day training course. This course is designed for all white-water paddlers, canoe and kayak. The objective is to teach simple and safe skills that can be applied appropriately.
